After a few tumultuous years – which included an almost fatal drug overdose, recovery, engagement and subsequent breakup – the “Anyone” frontman, 28, told Ellen DeGeneres that she had abandoned the past by shaving his head

“I cut my hair in November and I’m fair, I feel so free I feel more authentic to who I am and I also feel like I was hiding behind my hair,” said Lovato to DeGeneres on his talk show Monday

“I talked a lot about my past, how I was recovering from an eating disorder, and I used my hair to hide behind – it covered my body”

continued the pop star, “When I first started doing all this work on myself, I was like, ‘What have I held onto all my life that I have to give up? “I feel more like myself now”

Lovato’s longtime hairstylist Amber Maynard Bolt told Page Six Style at the time that the look “directly reflected who [Demi] is and how she felt.””

She also said: “There is something about changing your hair in such a drastic way that allows you to own yourself in a way you never imagined!”

In January, the singer marked the New Year by dyeing her honey blonde pixie a light pink hue; she now wears an even more vibrant shade

Lovato plans to share never-before-seen details about his recovering life in his upcoming YouTube documentary series, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” released March 23
