In February, Taylor confirmed that the re-recorded version of the album would include six tracks ~ from the Vault ~ that she wrote while filming Fearless but weren’t on the record.

“I decided I wanted you to have the whole story,” Taylor wrote in her ad, “See the whole picture alive and let yourself into the whole dream landscape that is my Fearless album “

During an infamous appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in November on January 11, 2008, Taylor, then 18, opened up about the recent demise of her relationship with Joe, alleging he broke up with her during a phone call that lasted 27 seconds

In the same interview, she revealed that “Forever & Always”, who appeared on Fearless, was talking about him

Of course, this is all speculation, and it could very well be that “Mr. Perfectly Fine ”isn’t about Joe Jonas at all We don’t know when exactly the song was written, but Taylor and Joe only came out three months before they broke up in October – less than a month before Fearless was released. 2008 interview with the Los Angeles Times, “Forever & Always” was written so late in the album’s creation process that Taylor had to advocate for it to be included on the record the day before it was finalized

Ultimately, though, it doesn’t matter who the song is about ~ actually ~ This Ellen interview was the closest we’ve ever seen to confirming the inspiration behind one of Fearless’s songs as a result. , 13 years later, Joe is still affiliated with the music Taylor made when she was 18

“Mr. Perfectly Fine” could be about Joe Jonas It might not But what matters is that people believe it is

Whether it’s simply the result of her maturity, long-term relationship, or the whole world turning against her and her personality, Taylor has changed her name

In many ways, 2017’s reputation was the start of Taylor’s complete personality upheaval, and that has only continued since his 2020 albums, Folklore and Evermore, were his least autobiographical, with Taylor choosing to draw inspiration from the experiences of fictional characters and fabricate new ones entirely in their writing rather than putting their own most personal moments on a shelf for public consumption

“There was a point where I came in as a writer who only wrote very diaristic songs, which I thought was unbearable for my future,” she told Zane. Lowe in an interview with Apple Music about the release of Evermore “It was like too hot from a microscope In my bad days, I would feel like loading a bait cannon, when it is not what I want for my life “

By now we all know that Taylor’s dispute with Big Machine Records over her main recordings is why she is going through this re-recording process. From the start, she made it clear that owning her work took priority over leaving her music and the associated drama in the past

The intensely personal nature of his music was something Taylor explicitly mentioned in his Tumblr post after Big Machine sold his masters to Scooter Braun, writing, “I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind. my past Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I imagined and paid for with the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then the stadiums “

So in order to reclaim her life’s work, Taylor is re-recording and re-editing all of this intensely personal music, and – to keep things fresh and exciting for fans who have known more than Fearless since 2008 – she includes songs that she has never published previously

In doing so, however, she runs the risk of refocusing all that personal drama and inviting her critics to rehash their oldest and less original complaints about her music: She only writes songs about the songs. ruptures She’s dating too many men It’s all about the drama

Those complaints may be outdated, but Taylor still faces them in 2021: Last month, she publicly condemned the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia for doing what she described as a “lazy joke and deeply sexist ”on his love life

Me in 2020: life is cold, writing songs based on fiction to avoid drama, feeling grown up enough

My 2008 music from the safe, in a goblin voice: “REELEEEEEEASE MR PERFECTLY FIIIIIIINE”

“Life is cold, write songs based on fiction to avoid drama, feel pretty adult,” Taylor wrote of herself for 2020 in her tweet announcing the track’s release

And then she admitted “in a goblin voice” that her 2008 music went against that cold new perspective.

By posting a link to the song on her Instagram Story just hours after its release, Sophie made sure to tag Taylor directly and wrote: “It’s NOT a bop”

(Joe was silent on the matter, but his blessing matters less If the ‘driver’s license’ debacle has taught us anything, it should be that even if a girl writes a song about a boy, people will find a way to turn it into a quarrel with another girl)

And so, good tweets were written, the beef was preemptively crushed and lessons were given: there is not always a need for drama There may just be bops

By posting “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” just days before Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Taylor anticipated and ended any overused and outdated criticism that could result from revisiting her past

She tells the world that she is both aware and laughing at the possibility that the tabloids are trying to stoke a decade-old drama Not only does she own her music, but she’s in one of the derogatory jokes you might want to make about it And you know what it is? Growth
