Covering the impact of the coronavirus on the world of sport

First shoe of 2021 NHL trade deadline dropped On Wednesday night, the New York Islanders caused a stir when they landed Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils in a trade at four players which also includes two draft picks

In exchange for Palmieri and Zajac, New Jersey gets forwards AJ Greer and Mason Jobst, Islanders first-round pick in 2021 and conditional fourth-round pick in 2022 NHL Draft If Islanders advance to final of the Stanley Cup, the fourth-round pick becomes a third round in 2022 or 2023 (New York picks the year if the conditional pick is triggered)

As part of the deal, the Devils will also keep 50% of Palmieri and Zajac’s salaries

Transaction #Isles: The #Isles acquired forwards Kyle Palmieri & Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for forwards Greer, Jobst, the #Isles first-round pick of the 2021 NHL Draft & a conditional pick of fourth round in the 2022 NHL Draft 1/2 https: // tco / BaV5g2DcNN

The profession provides the Isles with the help they need to score on the wing after losing Anders Lee to a late season injury Palmieri should help make up for Lee’s loss as he was one of the league’s most effective scorers before experiencing a year of decline in New Jersey this season. He has just eight goals and 17 points in 34 games played this season, but Palmieri has scored more than 20 goals in each of the last five full seasons with the Devils, racking up 132 goals from 2015 to 2020 (averaging 264 goals per year)

Placing Palmieri in the Islanders’ lineup, possibly alongside Mat Barzal on the top line, should make them more dangerous in the offensive end The Isles, currently tied with the Capitals for lead in the East Division, are ranked 14th in the league in goals per game (295)

Meanwhile, Zajac gives New York another veteran to add to his depth The 35-year-old veteran has seven goals and 18 points this season 20th overall pick in 2004, Zajac is a draft pick in the former Devils manager Lou Lamoriello, who now serves as Islanders general manager

Lamoriello’s aggression ahead of this year’s deadline indicates Islanders are all-in for another deep playoff series this season New York has advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals last year before being eliminated by eventual Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in six games
