Nenshi, the first Muslim mayor of a major Canadian city when he was elected in October 2010, made the announcement on social media on Tuesday

The 49-year-old holds a master’s degree from Harvard University, served as mayor of Calgary for three terms

“It was a tough decision to make but ultimately I think it’s the right decision for me and I really hope the right decision for Calgary,” Nenshi said on a Facebook livestream.

He added that he’s not going anywhere and his family is fine, but it’s time to make room in the job for someone else

Nenshi said he asked for a lot of advice on this matter But the most difficult conversation he had was with himself

“Is it irresponsible right now to hand over the baton at such a critical time for Calgary when we are faced with so many different things?”

Nenshi knew this would be his last term, but hadn’t decided when to release it

“I made the decision last Thursday now I have to tear up the bandage and tell people”

Nenshi, who oversaw Calgary during massive flooding in 2013, said he didn’t expect things to change so much with the COVID-19 pandemic

“Back in 2019 I never thought this might be the last time I ride in the Stampede Parade This might be the last time I hit the fireworks buttons on Canada Day

“Like many of us, COVID has swept away a lot and that’s a bit of a regret for me”

Prior to entering politics, Nenshi was a professor of commerce at Mount Royal University in Calgary and a management consultant
