There was hope as the Australian Open men’s singles final approached that the scorching form of Russian star Daniil Medvedev could stop dominant Novak Freight train Djokovic
The World No’s 20-game winning streak on the way to the Grand Slam final got many thinking that he would be the one to ultimately topple one of the ‘Big Three’ in a Grand Slam final – hopes that were quickly dashed in two consecutive sets
For many, this was further proof that Djokovic was in the best position to outlast longtime rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the battle for the most Grand Slam titles
Andy Murray, one of four players outside of the aforementioned ‘Big Three’ to win a Grand Slam since 2010, said Djokovic’s performance at the Australian Open shows the next generation is missing always the great game experience necessary for the success of the Grand Slam
After missing the Australian Open due to a coronavirus diagnosis in January Murray couldn’t bear to watch much of the tournament, it was his disappointment to miss the opportunity
The final was too enticing to pass up, but confirmed to the Scottish star that the gap between Djokovic and the rest is vast
“It’s different coming back or serving in a Grand Slam final, than a quarter-final or a semi-final, when you’re up against someone who’s won 17,” Murray said. p>
“At the US Open, (Dominic) Thiem did what he had to do to win the event, but if Novak hadn’t put a ball in the linesman’s throat it would have been the same result, I think “
Andy Murray revealed he couldn’t bring himself to watch the Australian Open and ditched other tennis players on social media after being forced to miss the event with coronavirus
Former world Non1 was unable to make it to Australia due to an untimely COVID-19 fight and while his colleagues were fighting in Melbourne he took part in a lower level tournament in Italy
“It was a struggle to be honest. I stopped following every tennis player I follow on social media and all because I didn’t really want to see it”
The tournament ended in a familiar way on Sunday with Novak Djokovic claiming a ninth title with a straight-set victory over Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles final
He struck another blow for Djokovic’s former guard Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer against the younger generation
“I expected the final to be closer to be honest, but I also know how good Novak is and when he’s in his game and obviously very motivated,” Murray said
“I saw before the final that Medvedev said something like Novak having enormous pressure on him, which is true
“But these guys have been at the top of the game, they’ve had to face tremendous pressure throughout their careers and they know how to deal with it and perform at their best when it counts.”
