The Minister of Education has confirmed the new reopening of certain youth services in response to the recent unrest

This change will apply to youth services which operate in areas of heightened community tensions in Northern Ireland

Peter Weir praised the services for their “vital role in supporting young people” in local communities

He said: “As a society we should all be dismayed to see young people and even children being involved in the recent violence on our streets

“At present it is even more important that youth services are able to respond to the needs of young people in these areas”

It was agreed that all youth centers and services that operate in areas where community tensions are heightened can maximize the use of their facilities and services with immediate effect.

This includes the provision of educational tours and residential services (overnight stays) where there is a significant risk of harm or criminalization of children and youth

The Minister added: “These measures aim to safeguard and ensure the well-being of our young people and to prevent them from engaging in risk-taking and dangerous behavior

“I would like to congratulate the youth service of the Education Authority and all the youth workers for their commitment to help our young people in these very difficult times”
