After a widespread – but short-lived – outage that affected scores of people, users reported on rival social media site Twitter that Facebook was back on line

While the Down Detector outage monitor – which spiked more than 100,000 reports from Facebook down when the issues first arose – has now seen the number of reported service issues drop dramatically

Facebook-owned social network Instagram was also taken offline tonight Independent crash monitor Down Detector saw a huge spike in Facebook down reports, with tens of thousands of issues reported

According to statistics from Down Detector, more than two-thirds of affected Facebook users experienced a blackout, while around a quarter faced connection issues

At the time of writing, Down Detector UK has recorded a peak of over 70,000 reports from Facebook down – with over 4,500 reports from Messenger down

The surge in Facebook reporting down began around 1030 a.m. UK time today, with users – as they typically do – take to rival social media site Twitter to report issues with the service

Despite the large number of reported issues with Facebook, Instagram and Messenger today, the latest server issues appear to be short lived

Since recording a peak of over 100,000 reported issues with Facebook, downdetectorcom – as well as Down Detector UK – has seen a sharp drop in reported issues

Facebook server issues come as security experts recently revealed personal information of more than half a billion Facebook users leaked online

Some 553 million accounts have been affected by the leak, with information such as phone numbers and email addresses to enter

Hackers leaked this huge amount of user data for free after trying to sell it

Accounts from 106 countries were allegedly involved in the leak, with more than 11 million UK users and 32 million US users reportedly affected

Speaking about the data breach, a Facebook spokesperson said the data was deleted due to a vulnerability that was patched in August 2019
