Georginio Wijnaldum criticized Liverpool’s slow start which contributed to a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday

Zinedine Zidane’s side will take a two-goal advantage for next week’s second leg at Anfield following the finishes of Vinicius Junior (two) and Marco Asensio in the Spanish capital

Mohamed Salah scored an away goal for the Reds shortly after half-time to bring the score to 2-1, although it was quickly followed by Vinicius’ second of the meeting

When asked if he thinks the opening 45 minutes was where the game escaped visitors, Wijnaldum told Liverpoolfccom: “Yes, of course

“You saw how we gave away the goals and how we played when we had the ball – it wasn’t good enough

“When we got the ball back we gave it too quickly and that’s why we had to run a lot and that’s why the first half was really intense, really heavy and hard

“I think it was more because of the way we played Who Killed Our First Half

“On the weekends when we got the ball we were really good, we played good football, and when we lost the ball our counter press was good

“Today in many moments the counterpress was good, but when we got the ball we didn’t keep it long enough to get into the game

“It got them into the game because they got the ball back very quickly and that’s how they created chances”

Jürgen Klopp’s side can take comfort in Salah’s effort in the 51st minute, although Wijnaldum is aware of how difficult the challenge will be to reverse the deficit and reach the semi-finals of the competition.

The midfielder continued: “It’s always good to have an away goal Unfortunately they scored one after scoring

“So I have to say it would have been easier if it was 2-1 or if we had scored [to make] 2-2 Now we have to score two and make sure we don’t concede
