Facebook and Instagram were down Thursday afternoon The outage appeared to start around 5:30 p.m. ET, with several thousand people reporting the outages on DownDetector The outage is the social media giant’s second in less than a month; an outage on March 19 took its sites offline for several hours Facebook returned an error message “Sorry, an error has occurred”:

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Verge on the cause of the outage; it is not known at this time when the service will be fully restored The outage also appeared to affect Facebook’s internal websites, first noted in a tweet from developer Jane Wong Even Facebook’s outage dashboard appeared to be in trouble

Shortly after 6 p.m. ET, Facebook and Instagram appeared to be returning to most users, but the Facebook status page never changed to reflect the outage as it happened
