Sen Ted Cruz called on people to “have a certain degree, a minimum of respect” after messages showed his family decided to fly to Mexico during the deadly winter weather last week

SenTed Cruz said on Tuesday that his wife, Heidi Cruz, was not very happy that some of his text messages were leaked to reporters amid the family’s much-criticized Mexican vacation during deadly winter weather last week in Texas

“I’ll say Heidi is pretty pissed off,” Cruz, 50, said of his wife, 48, in an episode of the Ruthless political podcast

Heidi’s messages in a neighborhood group chat were first sent to Reform Austin, a local outlet, amid last Thursday’s backlash against the Texas senator’s short trip to Cancun, in Mexico National media quickly picked them up as well (Source (s) have not been disclosed)

The texts – which show Heidi complaining about the “FREEZING” temperatures and discussing the family’s decision to fly to Cancun – were sent to the press as her husband tried to explain why he had done the travel when his home state struggled with widespread electricity and heat shortages

Last week’s winter weather, which hit Texas and other parts of the US, has been linked to some 70 deaths, according to the Associated Press, including more than a dozen deaths in their houses after losing heat

The senator quickly returned home to Houston after flying to Cancun on Wednesday night, although his family likely stayed for the rest of their trip

“Here’s a suggestion: don’t be a ——-” he said “Like, just, you know, treat each other like human beings have to some degree, a minimum of respect “

After a prolonged silence last week as photos of him at the airport circulated on social media, Cruz first said he was going to Mexico to – he hinted – drop off his young daughters , who, according to him, had requested the trip

Heidi’s texts, however, showed it was a family affair and she invited other people over as she also asked if the focus group members all got enough heat

In her posts she suggested the trip was an escape from the grueling time in Texas

Cruz later admitted that he planned to stay in Cancun for the weekend, but said he was going to work remotely from the famous beach retreat

“That the decision to leave was muted – listen, that was obviously a mistake,” he told reporters after arriving home on Thursday, with protesters gathered outside “Looking back, I wouldn’t have done it”

Cruz’s vacation was ridiculed by criticism from RepAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez to country singer Kacey Musgraves (Some advocates have argued, however, that Cruz was not directly responsible for the Texas emergency response, he should therefore be allowed to travel)

Cruz shared photos of him over the weekend distributing water in Texas and reiterated his commitment to the state in his media appearances, though critics have called the moves face saving hypocrisy

On Tuesday, Cruz laughed at the negative reactions he faced, saying, “I haven’t had as much negative media coverage since Northern California in the 1960s”, in a reference to internet memes jokingly saying he’s the Zodiac Killer

The Texas senator – who was again called to step down after last week’s vacation from Democratic critics – also brushed off complaints about his family’s decision to leave his dog Snowflake behind when they went to Mexico

“Of all the ridiculous stories,” said Cruz “Look, I love Snowflake He was at the house with a dog sitter and in fact the heat and electricity was back”

Cruz called a local reporter “creepy” for going to his neighborhood to find out if Cruz had power and then taking a photo of the family dog, which the reporter saw through the door. ‘entry

The Texas senator said it was “even scarier” that Heidi was photographed on the beach by paparazzi during the trip to Cancun

Cruz said the leaks were “a sign of how ridiculously politicized and mean people can be” and said his wife “was at a neighbor’s house” on Monday, indicating that she had confronted them about the texts disclosed

Overall, Cruz attributed the fallout from his trip to political differences, although some criticized him last week as “the enemy of our state” for leaving during the crisis
