LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A member of UCLA’s cross country and track teams has been fired because of a video that surfaced showing him using racist and homophobic language

When the video first appeared several months ago, he was initially suspended, according to Avery Anderson, UCLA director of athletics

“When I first learned of this a few months ago, I was disgusted and immediately suspended him from the team indefinitely,” Anderson said in a statement. “Even in my loathing as a coach my intentions are still to lead and educate and achieve the change I want to see in the world I can talk about changing the world, or I can work to do it and this is what I have been doing in recent months with this person

“In January I decided to bring him back to the team. However, after team members and the sports community expressed concern, it became clear that his continued involvement with the team is incompatible with the culture of mutual support and respect that we foster I know that the decision to reinstate him was not the right decision, and that the action today is the best for the well-being of our team “

According to the Los Angeles Times, a 4½-minute cell phone video posted to the “ucla_is_racist” Instagram account shows Weiland in a car using homophobic slurs

The account also posted text messages allegedly from Weiland in which he used racist slurs, The Times reports

The video was shot before Weiland entered UCLA in fall 2019, according to the Times

Weiland is from Rancho Cucamonga He spent one season at Cal State San Marcos and two more at Mt San Antonio College before moving to UCLA in 2019
